AFTER months of lockdown venues are starting to reopen - and now there is a new kid on the block in the shape of 66 American Steakhouse on Bridge Street.

The venue, housed in the Savoy Building (which is also home to the Chinese Buffet), it is the brainchild of Kane McQuade from St Helens.

He decided to invest in his hometown and open a steak and burger restaurant with a top chef in the town centre.

The eatery finally opened on May 22 after numerous delays due to the countless lockdowns.

Kane said: "I've been in management but I decided that I wanted to own my own place and at first I decided to make a bar, but after speaking to town centre manager Gary Maddock I realised the need for good eateries in St Helens as part of the town's regeneration and I was excited to be a part of that.

"I wanted to open an affordable place that offered good food and after interviewing chefs I found our chef who specialises in top quality steaks and burgers and I just thought that was a great idea and different to what else was out there."

Kane took over the venue and slowly did the place up himself, offering diverse seating layout including benches, booths and tables with scope to offer cocktails in the future once established.

He said: "It's been a long time coming as I was hoping to open in April 2020, then November 2020 but covid pushed this all back but what that has meant is we've perfected the menu to offer a limited and top menu for customers.

"We've got delicious steaks, which are some of the best I've ever had, even the cheaper cuts, and things like Halloumi fries, dirty burgers, calamari, ribs and more, just proper tasty American food at a decent price.

"Currently I can only sell alcohol with food, but I hope once established to get a licence to serve cocktails and be not just an eatery but a nice place to come with your mates for a nice drink in a relaxed, not bar like, setting.

"It's family friendly, affordable and really tasty food in our town centre, and I think that the way town centres are transforming meaning we need investment into eateries, bars and independent shops to build up our town centre.

"Plus Bridge Street is really busy and a great place to be, there's no empty units. It's good to be part of the change, people have made comments about me being next door to the vegan restaurant, but that's what is so great about St Helens now, there is a place for everyone and Ann-Marie is a great neighbour and her cakes are amazing.

"There's enough negativity out there and thanks to Gary and other people opening places up, St Helens is slowly changing too and it's great to see and be a part of it."
