A MAN who falsely confessed to murdering a prostitute could now be charged with wasting police time.
Kevin Kilshaw, 44, formerly of Pentland Avenue, Parr, was lying when he walked into St Helens Police station on September 19 last year and admitted murdering Ann-Marie Foy.
But Merseyside Police did not suspect his confession was bogus. And after police consulted with the Crown Prosecution Service, a decision was taken to charge Kilshaw with murdering Ann Marie, who had been found dead near to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital on September 15, 2005.
Two months after his confession, Kilshaw's defence suspected he had a history of making false confessions and they alerted the prosecution.
Police investigations continued and last month they determined Kilshaw did have an alibi and was in fact in London at the time of the murder.
The hearing date at Liverpool Crown Court was brought forward, with Kilshaw found not guilty after the CPS offered no evidence.
This week Detective Chief Inspector Dave Kelly from Merseyside Police, who is leading the murder investigation, said there had been no intelligence on the police database that suggested Kilshaw had lied to other police forces about committing crimes.
Nor was there any knowledge that he suffered from a mental condition that makes him prone to lying.
Kilshaw had made the false admissions days after a regional TV appeal for information that coincided with the anniversary of the mother-of-four's death.
The CPS will now decide whether Kilshaw has to face a prosecution for wasting police time.
