FORMER leader of St Helens Council Brian Spencer will contest the St Helens South and Whiston seat in the general election.
The Liberal Democrat, who stood for the seat in 2010, has a political career stretching back more than 30 years and led the council for four years from 2006.
In contesting the seat to be vacated by Shaun Woodward, Mr Spencer will be up against former Liberal Democrat colleague John Beirne who is standing for UKIP and old adversary Marie Rimmer.
James Chan will also contest the seat for the Greens.
A former electrician, Mr Spencer previously stood in the constituency in 2010, finishing second with 22.2 per cent of the vote.
Meanwhile, the St Helens North seat will be contested for the Liberal Democrats by Denise Aspinall. Denise stood in the Ellesmere Port and Neston constituency in 2010, finishing in third.
Other confirmed candidates for the constituency are Northern Irishman Conor McGinn for Labour, Ian Smith for UKIP, Paul Richardson from the Conservatives and Elizabeth Ward of the Greens.
