AFTER she was named the winner of the Glass Horse Courage Award Jessica Johnson said it had boosted her confidence.
In July 2013 Jessica was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 18.
Besides taking the decision to have it removed she also agreed for her story to be televised to help young people.
The operation was scheduled one week after her 19th birthday and lasted five hours. After undergoing a course of physiotherapy and also speech lessons Jessica has returned to her volunteering with the Brownies and Beavers.
She told the audience: “I started back at university in September and at one point I didn’t think I would be able to do it.
“I had a lot of support from everybody and the TV programme helped me get through it.
“Having the camera there made me feel better.”
Speaking backstage Jessica who is from Rainford admitted: “I’m shocked but really happy. I do feel a bit courageous after winning the award.
“When people see that I can fight through it it might make them feel stronger as well.
“After what I went through last year I feel as if I can face anything.”
