PICK OF THE WEEK: The Flaming Lips - The Terror

THE Flaming Lips are possibly one of the most hit-and-miss bands from the past 30 years.

Their three decade stint in the business has seen the release of some truly wonderful and great albums, alongside some not-so-wonderful, why-did-you-bother-to-make-that ones.

The Terror is the band’s latest release and it’s safe to say, it doesn’t fall into the latter of the two afore mentioned categories.

Returning the weirdly, uneasy, experimental roots adopted in the early-90s, The Flaming Lips’ new album deals with the complex understandings of love and humanity.

Look...The Sun Is Rising eerily draws you into the record, making you wonder if this is your cup of tea. Stick with it, though. Psychedelic through and through, the album seamlessly blends and flows in an ear-pleasing, synthesised way.

As the album comes to a close, Turning Violent grabs you once more with an uneasy, yet beautifully playful beat.

Frontman Wayne Coyne said that “The Terror is, we know now, that even without love, life goes on.” The intensity of his words certainly comes across in the album. It’s bleak, it’s moving, it’s brilliant...
