MATHER John Anthony 24/7/49 - 11/5/24 Loving birthday memories of John. Fondly remembered by so many as their cheery window cleaner, rarely happier than being up his ladder for "his ladies" in Haydock. Although during his early years, John had an infamous reputation as a bad boy, he turned over a new leaf in middle age and settled down when he met his partner of almost 45 years, Sue Bluck. Over the years John enjoyed playing darts, fishing, music, loved a party and enjoyed getting up for a dance, he was a TV sports fan, and latterly discovered TV quiz shows - but his lifelong hobby was a bet on the horses, talking about owners, trainers, jockeys you'd think he knew them personally. John was happiest spending his weekends in Wales with Sue, his children George and Sophie, his grandaughter, Megan and his pet dogs. In May 2019, John chased three young would be handbag snatchers in Grange Valley, he was nearly 70 ! This information only came to light 2 months later when his oncologist, broke the bad news that his window cleaning days were over, he tried to argue as to his fitness, he was devastated. John faced his cancer diagnosis with a very positive attitude, rarely complaining and still cracking jokes and bursting into song, keeping his loved ones and his carers on their toes. John refused to discuss his death until his last few weeks, when he realised he wouldn't reach his 75th birthday. He was adamant, no fuss, no flowers, no funeral. He asked that his ashes be scattered on his favourite beach in Wales. John is survived by his partner Sue, son George, daughter Sophie and grandaughter Megan, his twin Alison, his brothers-in -law Dave and Paul, stepson Jason, nieces and nephew. His sister Joan, brother Mike, beloved nephew Paul and son Darren, predeceased him.

I have only recently found out that John has died. I knew him many years ago due to my friendship with Joyce and Sue Bluck (Sue was John’s partner), and I recently met John again when he was an inpatient in St. Helens Hospital in the bed next to my dad. He was very kind and considerate to my 90 year old dad and despite being poorly still had his great sense of humour and cheeky smile. Rest in peace John xx
