Why visit The Three Sisters?
The Three Sisters is a wildlife wetland reserve and a gateway into Wigan’s wonderful wildlife areas. Visitors can be thrilled by the beauty of the lake which is home to a variety of wildlife: Goosanders, Mute Swans, Grey Heron, Kingfisher and many more.
The Three Sisters is also famous for its bird feeding station, which draws the attention of local bird spotters from the area, offering the perfect opportunity to get a closer look of the native wildlife.
The reserve was once famous for its three ‘Spoil Heaps’ (more on that later!) which formed The Three Sisters and now is officially known as the Three Sisters Recreation Area.
How did the Three Sisters get its name?
In the early 1970s, the Three Sisters was created from industrial waste land. It gets its name from the three huge coal mining spoil heaps from the old Garswood Hall colliery which was located close by.
For many years, these heaps of landscapes were known as the Wigan Alps but are now developed into a nature park, visitors centre and the Three Sisters Racetrack.
The Three Sisters Racetrack
The Three Sisters like most tracks can host a variety of two or four-wheel motor sport to maximise its appeal. It used to be only a car track but has now been updated to include bike and car track event days as well as motorcycle club level test days.
Drifting is a popular motor sport and regularly occurs throughout the season at the Three Sisters. The Three Sisters host a variety of events from local racers, test driving their cars, to top of the range professionals who compete in British Drift Championships.
However, the Three Sisters racetrack does not only present drift championships but also presents race karting and super car driving experiences and track days for both car and motorcycles.
This track is also famous for appearing on an episode of Top Gear, when presenters Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris all came to visit the spectacular track.
What other activities occur at the three sisters?
In each direction of the reserve, there are paths that lead off to calm and peaceful walking routes. Once the top of the hill is reached, there are many idyllic views. These can be experienced by walking, cycling, or even horse riding. There are also picnic areas to end the walk with, so don’t forget to grab an ice cream!
When you have finished experiencing the wonderful views, you can enjoy a coffee and cake, at The Hamlet Cafe.
Finally, The Three Sisters is a wonderful family day out, as there is everything you need to keep everyone happy!
