Michael Smith suffers World Grand Prix knockout

ST HELENS darter Michael Smith suffered a first round knockout in the BoyleSports World Grand Prix title in Coventry on Tuesday.

Dimitri Van den Bergh produced an assured display to dump out fourth seed Smith in a battle of former World Youth Champions.

Belgian sensation Van den Bergh, who won the World Matchplay in July, crowned an impressive performance with a 132 checkout to prevent a deciding set.

With Stephen Bunting forced out due to a positive Covid test, it leaves Dave Chisnall flying the flag for the town in the competition that has a £110,000 top prize.

Chisnall faces Glen Durrant in the tonight's continuing first round.
