MARK Brown's tactics did the trick as he fended off 19 fellow anglers to win Newton-le-Willows Anglers Association's Dennis Butcher Trophy match on Havannah Flash.

Fishing with a pole using worm or maggot on the hook, he landed bream, tench, eels and silver fish for a total weight of 12lbs 0ozs 0drs from peg seven.

His nearest rivals in joint second place were Ian Wilson from Newton and Anthony Fairclough from St Helens.

Result:

Dennis Butcher Trophy match, Havannah Flash (20 pegs):

1. Mark Brown (Newton-le-Willows), peg 7, with bream, tench, eels and silvers on pole and worm or maggot for 12-0-0.

2= Ian Wilson (Newton-le-Willows), peg 22 and Anthony Fairclough (St Helens), peg 23, with bream, tench and silvers on pole and caster or maggot for 10-3-0.

4. Jason Percy (St Helens), peg 30, with bream and tench on method feeder for 6-10-8.
