Racing returns to Haydock Park for first time since coronavirus lockdown

HORSE racing action returned to Haydock Park at the weekend for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown.

The racecourse hosted its first meeting in 113 days on Sunday (June 7) as 10 races were held behind closed doors.

Lord North triumphed in the big race of the day, The Brigadier Gerard Stakes.

Earlier, Babbo's Boy came first on the day's opening race, The Betway Handicap Stakes.

Next, Walkonby crossed the line first in The Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap Stakes.

Manuela De Vega made every yard of the running in a fast paced Betway Pinnacle Stakes.

Then in the day's big race, Lord North held on in a thrilling photo finish to win against the favourite Elarqam in the feature Betway Brigadier Gerard Stakes under Robert Havlin for John Gosden.

Meanwhile, a cracking race from favourite Space Blues saw it triumph in the Betway Spring Trophy Stakes in style.

Golden Melody won the Betway British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes under James Doyle and Liberty Beach got then back to winning ways in the Betway EBF Cecil Frail Fillies' Stakes under Jason Hart for John Quinn.

Variyann won the Betway Casino Handicap Stakes before Howzer Black won the penultimate race of the day, the Read Andrew Balding On Betway Insider Handicap.

Finally, Midnights Legacy took The Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap Stakes to round off Haydock's return to racing action.
