'I've worked hard and put a lot of effort in' says Jack Welsby after Warrington display

SAINTS youngster Jack Welsby has spoken of his delight after putting in a man of the match display against Warrington in his "biggest game so far".

The 18-year-old had a hand in a number of Saints' tries and put in a solid defensive performance as he was awarded the Sky Sports man of the match following the 30-12 win at Warrington.

He told Saints TV after the game: "I was absolutely made up, not only for the man of the match, that's an added bonus but the result, it's a massive result for us and today might be my biggest game so far so to get a result like that in an atmosphere like that is massive."

One of the highlights of his performance was a tackle to stop Wolves giant forward Ben Murdoch-Masila while he was ona charging run towards the Saints line.

"When he broke through I thought just get in front of him, slow him down and somebody might come from behind but thankfully I got my arms round him and managed to bring him down," added Welsby.

The teenager, who made his ninth first team appearance of the season last Thursday, spoke of the hard work he as put in and revealed how getting some tips from regular fullback Lachlan Coote has helped him.

"I'm harsh on myself, my first game away at London probably wasn't my best performance, that's probably down to myself," he added.

"I've gone away and worked on it and put a lot of effort in and a lot of catching the high bombs and just having chats with Cootey and getting some experience off him, it's been a really good help to have such a good lad around and working hard.

"Everyone will tell you (the step up from academy) is massive, I'm sure I've said it before, the physicality is what you worry about but it's the intensity, set for set carrying every set. It's hard work, it's a massive step up.

"I'm happy with my minutes so far this season but I'll take whatever comes in my stride and try and give the best performances that I can."
