DAVID Wilson and Kane Green crossed the Pennines to represent St. Helens Striders at the North of England Cross Country Championships at Pontefract Racecourse last Saturday.

Over the brutal 12km course, the intrepid local duo performed admirably in a race packed with some of The North’s finest athletic talent. Wilson came out on top, finishing in an impressive 123rd place of 704 competitors in a blistering time of 43:55. In his first race after an injury lay-off, Green exceeded his expectations, crossing the line in 185th place in a time of 45:26. The Striders men had their teammate Cherryl Orrick to thank, in part, for making the journey to spur them on throughout the race with her inspirational support.

Closer to home, Striders were also well represented at the Warrington 5 Mile Winter Trail Race. Kevin Brennan was first home in 12th place in a time of 33:26. Sarah Charlton delighted her teammates with a fleet footed new personal best of 42:15. Completing the Striders trio was Sue Burke, who completed the challenging course in 1:02:37.

Brenda Carrier was Striders’ sole representative at the Heaton Park 10k in Manchester. She wowed the locals, crossing the line in a superb time of 53:11.

At the Hunters 10k in Preston, Ian Spencer overcame blustery conditions to finish in just under an hour.
