Michael Smith reaches World Darts Championship Final

ST HELENS darter Michael Smith has reached the final of the William Hill World Darts Championship after seeing off a spirited challenge from Nathan Aspinall.

Smith looked to be coasting at 2-0, but the Stockport underdog bounced back to level.

But Smith himself found something, digging deep and rattling off a succession of 180s, to wrap up the match 6-3 with an average of 105.2.

He will now play world number one Michael van Gerwen on New Year's Day at Alexandra Palace.

Smith said: "I have never felt like that ever. I am so happy that I am in the final.

"The first two sets I was cruising, but when Nathan got better I took my chances when they came.

"The double nine pulled me out today.

"Every game I have come in as favourite, because the others fell by the wayside, and I am glad to reach the final.

"It sounds so good. I am one step ahead from living my dream."
