A solid start for Connolly

THIS week the cold and wet winter weather set in but it didn’t stop a number of St. Helens Sutton A.C. athletes from taking on the cross country, trail and road.

Early Saturday morning a group of juniors and seniors headed to the testing Stockport Woodbank Park cross country to brave the elements.

In the first race of the day the pairing of Luke Wilson (11:56) and Will Vose (12:02) worked together to battle the conditions, with their U11 Boys team rounded out with a great run by Lewis Shaw (13:02).

In the U11 Girls Poppy Ward was the only Sutton girl to compete running a strong 17:21 over the tough course.

Gabriel Mullen (13:04) again was solo in the U13 boys having a great run just missing a top 20 placing.

In the U13 Girls the trio of Daisy Ward (15:46), Chloe-Leigh Mark (16:35) and Jessica Bairstow (17:22) all showed great form.

The under 15 boys were well represented with first home for the team, Joseph Byrne (16:11) having a fantastic run. Next back was Andrew Worthington (18:12) followed by Ayaan Syed (19:18), Matthew Dodd (19:26) and Michael Duffy (20:04).

In the U17 men, Charlie Roberts (23:08) and Michael Brussels (25:42) showed great strength over the longer distance.

The ever-impressive Gemma Connolly (35:08) began her cross country season with her first race this season finishing in seventh place over all.

While the last race of the day saw Andrew Wilson (42:41) finish inside the top 100 of the 400 plus size field, followed by Ian Roberts (49:10).

That evening Tom Griffiths continued to show his fantastic form and provided a slightly different result to Sunday’s derby football match as the Sutton athlete and Evertonian upset the Liverpool Harriers team as he took third place splitting their top three streak and knocked over a minute from his 5k PB running 14:42.

Sunday saw Dave Twigg celebrate his return to form as he decimated a 12-year-old PB and finished a strong 5th at the Lancaster Half Marathon with a time of 1 hour 21.
