Sports hall to Ultras in a busy weekend

IT was a busy one for St Helens Sutton A.C. athletes with races taking place all over the North West from Sports Hall Athletics to 40 mile Ultra Marathons.

The first race of the weekend may have been the earliest to start but the latest to finish on the Saturday as Sonya Monaghan took on her first Ultra over the impressive 40 mile Warrington Way running a fantastic time of 7 hours 23mins.

The second Manchester Area Cross Country Match saw a great turnout from Sutton’s juniors.

In the U11 Boys Luke Wilson and Will Vose were 44th and 45th followed by Lewis Shaw in 66th to complete the team. Poppy Ward was the only U11 girl out for St Helens finishing 79th.

In the U13 Boys Gabriel Mullen finished 20th with Joseph Colley in 41st.

The U13 girls had the biggest turnout for Sutton with Poppy Handley-Hicking back first in 48th followed by Daisy Ward (60th), Jessica Bairstow (69th), Chloe-Leigh Mark (83rd) and Eve Watts (85th).

In the U15 Boys first back from Sutton was Joseph Byrne (14th)followed by Andrew Worthington (34th), Michael Duffy (45th) and Matthew Dodd (47th). In the U17 men Charlie Roberts continued his superb for finishing 7th followed by Michael Brussels in 27th. And in the senior men, Ian Roberts finished 363rd followed by Andrew O’Connor (434th) out of 526 athletes.

Also on Saturday a couple senior men headed to Cheshire in search of 10k PB’s in the quick Cheshire 10k, with the fantastically in form Tom Griffiths finishing 4th in a top class field with a massive new PB of 30:37.

Griffiths was then followed by Dave Twigg again running a new PB of 34:40, and rounding out the trio was Steve Anders getting back to form after a bad injury early in the year with 35:25.

And over in Wales Janet Holmes took on the mountains over the brutal Bets-Coed 10k Trail Race running 1 hour 10min.
