Fine performances from St Helens Sutton in cross country league

THE weekend saw the first race in the classic Liverpool & District Cross Country League, and the St Helens Sutton seniors, hampered by colds and injuries just missed out on turning out a counting team of six.

But of the five athletes that competed there were some great performances, first home was Sutton’s Chairman, Matt Crehan, who managed to upset a Liverpool Harriers team aiming for a straight top-six finish as he came in 5th in 34:12 for the 10km course at Arrowe Country Park. Next back for Sutton was David Twigg (28th 40:00) in his first main race back after suffering ligament damage when twisting his ankle back at the Dream Trail race at the end of August, just 10 places further back was the evergreen John Greenall back competing on his favourite surface the country in 38th (41:06) and second over 50. Next back was Ian Costello in 44:21, 63rd. And finishing in the annoying position of 4th woman (47:48), Amy Corfield had a great run after a rough week, to round out the Sutton squad.
