Third place for Charlie in 800m
LAST weekend saw the Northern Under 17 Athletic Championships take place just down the road at Leigh Sports Village.
And with it three fantastic performances from some of St Helens Sutton’s rising stars.
In the Under 13 Boys, Michael Dobson took on the gruelling challenge of the 800m, a distance made famous by the battles of Seb Coe versus Steve Ovett in the 1970s.
Dobson claimed sixth with a time of 2:21.0 achieving a Grade 1 Standard.
In the Under 15 Boys, Michael Brussels rose to a new challenge as he completed his first 3,000m race.
He finished10th in 11:18.7 against a field of the top class Northern runners.
Both he and his coach Helena McGoldrick look forward to seeing how he develops at this event over the coming, ‘strength building’ winter months.
But the highlight performance was that of Charlie Roberts in the U15 800m.
After the disappointment of being over looked by Merseyside for the English Schools earlier this year, Roberts again showed the class and perfection of a true promising talent.
He took the bronze medal, in a photo finish for silver, and a time of 2:03.5.
It is on the shoulders of talented athletes like these that St Helens Sutton history lies.
A spokesperson for the club said: “We look forwarded to seeing just what these three men can do over the coming years!â€
