Golds and silvers for St Helens Sutton athletes

ST HELENS Sutton competed with the best of Merseyside track and field in the County Championship at Bebbington.

Starting over on the field St Helens Sutton took gold and silver in the senior women’s Hammer event, with Patricia Spark taking the win from Julia Hayes.

And in the senior men’s hammer, Ian Conway took silver, which he followed later in the day with a silver in the shot putt.

In the junior age group shot putt, Luca Noonan (U15 Boy) finished 5th, though he took a double silver across the 100m and 200m later in the day, while Thomas Durance took bronze in the U13 Boys Shot Putt and also competed in the long jump.

Celine Virton had a great day in the U15 Girls throws with Gold in the Discus, Bronze in the Javelin and 5th in the Shot Putt.

In the long jump, Sutton saw a number of great performances, the strongest being Daniel Lamb’s win in the U20 men’s competition, he also took bronze in the 100m later in the day.

Micheal Causer took silver in the Senior Men’s long jump, while Niamh Abbot also took home silver in the U13 girls age group, with Jasmine Scott taking bronze behind her.

Sophie Jones and Sophie Robinson finished 6th and 10th respectively in the U11 Girl’s long jump, with James Moran 6th in the U15 and Daniel Dobson 5th in the U17 Boys events.

One of the highlight performances of the day was Charlie Roberts Gold in the U15 Boys High Jump, where he obliterated his PB to a tense and competitive final, which came after him taking bronze in the 800m earlier in the day.

On to the track event and Sutton continued to see success with Geroge Asson taking gold and silver in the U20 Men’s 200m and 100m events.

In the other sprint events, Michael Farr took home silver and bronze in the U17 boys 100m and 200m and in the U11 Girl’s 150m Millie Holden won silver, with Sophie Robinson 8th and Elizabeth Greenhall took home the bronze medal over the U15 Girls 75m Hurdles.

Michael Dobson became County Champion in the U13 Boys 800m along with Kelly Hamilton in the Senior Women’s event, with Kelly managing a double, winning the 1500m later in the day from training partner Rachael Fairclough who took silver, and had competed in the 3000m earlier also taking silver.

Matt Crehan after a double win as well started well with gold in the Senior Men’s 3000m, but speed failed him in the home straight of the 1500m where he had to settle for silver.

Overall it was a great day of athletics and saw the highest turnout, the Merseyside County Championships have for several years.
