Striders step up to rigours of triathlon

THERE has been a buzz around the running club recently regarding cross-training and the benefits it brings to running fitness.

Many of the club members have took this to the next level, undertaking the challenge and serious training for a triathlon.

Our first tri-athletes out of the starting block this year were Stuart Tagg, Sharon O’Connell, Joanne Jackson, and Mike Cox undertaking the West Lancashire Spring Triathlon hosted by Edge Hill University in their stunning grounds and new pool facilities.

A 400m swim, followed by a 20K bike ride on the scenic roads surrounding the University, and a 5K run route round the lakes and gardens, culminating with a sprint finish on the running track, meant all of our tri-athletes felt a real sense of pride and achievement reaching the finishing line. Stuart Tagg was first Strider home in 1 hour 20 minutes, with Sharon O’Connell not far behind in 1.29, Joanne Jackson and Mike Cox finished in 1.32 and 1.37 respectively. Brilliant efforts for 1st timers to the triathlon experience!

Further afield Peter and Rachael Fairclough headed abroad this week, completing the “Mitja Marato de Pollenca” 5K race through the Port of Pollensa. Rachael finished 2nd lady in 19 mins 46 secs with Peter Fairclough just ahead, having already been in triathlon training camps all week.
