Sisters selected for European Judo Championships

JUDO sisters Bekky and Amy Livesey have both been selected to compete in the 2017 European Judo Championships in Warsaw later this month.

It is the first time that the pair, both products of the SKK Judo Club, have been selected in the same team for a senior major championships.

Older sister Amy, 23, made her debut at the event in 2016 where she reached the last 16.

Bekky, who will compete in the 57kg weight, has recently recovered from a knee injury which forced her to miss six months of action.

However, the 21-year-old made her competitive return at the Dubrovnik Senior European Cup where she finished seventh.

And the 2015 Junior European bronze medallist had made a successful transition to senior level last year, winning at bronze at the Zagreb Grand Prix as well as silver and bronze respectively at the Tallinn and Madrid European Opens.

Meanwhile Amy, who will fight in the 63kg weight category, has also recently returned from an elbow injury and picked up her best result since her return to competition at the Tbilisi Grand Prix last weekend when she finished seventh.

The 23-year-old was European Under-23 Champion in 2015 and also won her first Grand Prix medal last year when she won bronze in Budapest.

The sisters will be part of an 11-strong British selection, which will see a mix of experienced judoka, including 2016 Olympians, and debutants take to the mat for the first major championship of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle.

Bekky will compete on the first day of competition in Poland on Thursday, April 20, while Amy will be in action a day later on Friday 21.
