Matt Crehan leads St Helens-Sutton to a second-placed finish

MATT Crehan led an under-strength St Helens-Sutton into second place at the end of the Liverpool & District League season. Finishing fourth on the day with 129 points behind Liverpool, Wirral (122) and Wallasey (128) the club had plenty in hand from the previous two matches to clinch second place for the season.

Matt finished fifth, Peter Fairclough (14) and Steve Anders, who recently welcomed a new baby into the world, (19th).

Evergreen John Greenall was 20th.

Dave Twigg 35th and Greg Williams, continuing his comeback, 36th.

Another athlete making a cross country comeback, Jake Healey was 65th while it was good to see Ian White wearing Sutton colours again as he edged out youngster Leon Hill.

Rachel Beesley did well on the tough course to finish 86th, four places ahead of L&D President Ray Vose who belied his years in 90th position.

Amy Corfield beat a host of Wallasey runners to grab 102nd place despite the difficulties provided by the slipping and sliding course.

Among those missing on this occasion were Tom Griffiths, Andy Wilson, Peter Johnson and Louise Hogg all of whom should be available for the Merseyside Championships next month. Janet Holmes acted as timekeeper and John Irwin as the club's marshal. The next club meeting is the Christmas Handicap on Sunday.

The Christmas Handicap will be on Sunday 18 December at 11am.

There will be a race for U11s and any parents or other adults who wish to take part.

This will be followed by Juniors and then the seniors handicap. Seniors is from U17 upwards.
