Jamie Webb signs off BUCS career with 1,500m gold
RAINHILL athlete Jamie Webb has rounded off a successful BUCS career in style with a gold in the 1500m at the British Universities and College Sports’ outdoor track championships.
The Manchester Metropolitan University scholar is the British senior indoor 800m champion and has his sights set on Rio this summer.
The 21-year-old won the 800m gold in the British Universities and College Sports’ outdoor championships in 2015 and was over the moon to experience success at the event again.
“I’m delighted to win again, especially over 1500m as it was my first championship at the distance,†Webb said.
“We thought it would be fun to try to win the 1500m after the 800m last year, and had come off a bit more of an endurance base off the back of the indoors so thought I stood a good chance!â€
Webb strikes the challenging balance between being an athlete and being in the final year of a Chemistry degree and plans to push himself beyond BUCS this summer.
“I’d say that making Euro U23s last year is my greatest achievement however I plan to top that this summer! This summer my main focus will be athletics and trying to make Rio. The plan is to open up my season this weekend in Sportcity to shake the legs out before hitting Europe to try and clock a qualifying standard before the Olympic trials in June.â€
The former St Helens Sutton athlete, who now runs for Liverpool Harriers, says that his three years as university has helped him to develop as an athlete.
“My time at university has been my transition from an average athlete to what will hopefully be a professional level this summer. I’ve had brilliant support from MMU Sport throughout with nutritional guidance, massage, strength and conditioning, and financial support, which has really helped me get the position I’m in now.â€
Webb will travel to Birmingham for the British Championships on 24th-26th June looking to qualify for Rio.
