Owen Livesey takes bronze in Lima Pan American Open

OWEN Livesey (-81kg) took another step on the road to the Rio Olympics with a bronze medal at the Lima Pan American Open.

The St Helens judoka went in as top seed and justified his ranking with two strong wins over Rogerio Binoto Filho (BRA) and Emirhan Yucel (TUR) to secure a place in the semi-final.

Livesey came up against Montonegro’s 2011 World Championship silver medallist Srdjan Mrvaljevic and it was the British judoka who missed out on a place in the final having had a waza-ari scored against him.

However the British athlete showed his ability coming back well against Marlon Acacio (MOZ) as he took the contest with an ippon score three minutes into the bronze medal match.

Livesey will next be in action at the Buenos Aires Pan American Open on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 March.
