Prescot hockey results round-up
WITH their nearest rivals all playing each other and points being dropped Prescot Men looked to press home their advantage against bottom side Lytham.
And that is what they did, winning 4-0.
Prescot started brightly with goals from Boulton and Mortimer in the first half. Lytham belied their lowly position with some spirited play but Prescot struck again with goals form Lomax and Johnson to secure a valuable three points.
Prescot Men 2nds put up a valiant fight against a strong Horwich and were unlucky to lose a five goal thriller 3-2.
In the England Hockey over 50s Cup Prescot Vintage beat Durham Vintage 3-1.
In their inaugural season the Vintage have now reached the semi final of the Vintage Shield.
On a blustery afternoon at Sutton Prescot started very brightly and from their first attacking position forced a penalty corner which was expertly finished by Clucas. minutes later Heneberry found himself free in the D only to be scythed down by two Durham defenders.
Clucas again stepped up and converted the penalty flick. The game then changed with Durham seeing more and more of the ball with their players attacking at will. However the Prescot defence held strong with superb efforts from Maher, Boocock and Liptrot at the back.
Lear was in goal again and pulled a number of superb saves to keep the score 2-0 at half time.
With rolling subs and both teams tiring, Durham struck back and the last fifteen minutes looked like being a frantic finish.
However, in a rare Prescot foray forward another penalty corner was conceded and Clucas completed his hat-trick to complete a stunning win for Prescot.
Durham should be commended for their tireless running for 70 minutes however the whole Prescot team stood tall to create club history and become the first Prescot side to reach a national cup competition.
Finally, all seven of the Prescot's Lancashire trialists have been selected to play for Lancashire under 16s (boys) and Lancashire under 14s and under 16s in the County Championships.
It is the first time in more than 20 years that the club has had County representation and is the culmination of many months hard work from the players and the volunteer coaches.
