St Helens duo head to European Karate Championships

TWO St Helens girls will represent KUGB England Team at the European Karate Championship this weekend.

Katherine Cheshire and Nicole Donoghue have both earned their call ups and will compete in the Youth Ladies Individual Kumite and Junior Ladies Individual Kumite respectively.

Cheshire has had a great year culminating in a full call up to represent the KUGB England Kumite Team in the 14 to 15 age group.

She came third at the North West Open at the start of the year has gone on to be placed first at the Welsh Kyu Grades Championships and the August Grand Slam event between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

More recently she was the winner of the KUGB Shotokan Cup and Northern Region Karate Championships.

Cheshire, who achieved her Dan grading this year, owes thanks to everyone at Halewood Karate Club and Sensei Richard Pavši? who allows her to access additional training at the Lancashire Shotokan Karate Academy.

She is following in the well-established footsteps of her friend and team mate Nicole Donoghue.

Donogue, trained by Sensei Ian Roberts at St Helens Shotokan Karate Club, is no stranger to the England Team.

She has been consistently successful at both National and International level for several years.

The 20-year-old from New Bold is a firmly established and proven member of the England Team had her most recent international success in October at the World Shotokan Karate Championship that took place in Poland.

Donoghue rose to the challenge of stepping up an age category to help the Senior Ladies Kumite Team secure third place against tough international competition.
