Striders among the Grand Prix prizes

SST HELENS Striders were among the winners in this summer's Merseyside Grand Prix; a series of races held between March and September where running and athletics clubs from across the region compete as individuals and teams.

Individual prizes went to Rachael Fairclough, second female, Kevin Brennan, third male, Paul Demore, 1st vet 45 male, Pauline Horsfall, 1st vet 55 female.

In the team event the club's ladies finished 2nd overall rounding off a successful summer for the Striders.

On Saturday morning a Strider contingent descended on Lymm, Cheshire, to take part in the inaugural Warrington Way 40 mile ultra marathon.

The event also allowed for 10 mile relay teams of four.

Torrential rain and difficult underfoot conditions over much of the mixed terrain course made for a challenging day.

Finishing the 40 mile event (which turned out to be 41.5 miles in real terms) in a terrific 5th place overall was Kevin Brennan in 6 hrs, 7 mins.

He was followed by Ian Wright, Scott Robertson, Gill Lee, Paddy Lee, Joanne Jackson and Gary Spriggs.

Relay runners Kevin Outten, Nicola Howarth, Loiuse Padmore, Carol Foster, Sam Bailey, Georgie Warner, Steve Wright, Paul Hargate, Matthew Swann, Donna Halsall, Mike Brunt, Natalie Duckworth, Rachel Tickle, Vicky Kehoe, Jade Booth, Gemma Webster, Martin Farrar and Dave Navis all completed 10 or 20 miles each.

On Sunday at Stadt Moers Park, Whiston, St Helens Striders fielded teams for the second race of the North West Cross country League.

Competing on the day were Kev Outten, John Lingard, Chris Reid, Martin Ballard, Jono Kirkham, Rich Seville, Paul Demore, Neil Rigby, Simon Poole, Kylie Maguire and Laura Buckley.
