COUNCIL sports pitches in St Helens will be open this weekend, with fixtures going ahead at the referee’s discretion.

Pitches have been closed in recent weeks following sustained rainfall.

A council spokesman said: "After checking on the condition of St Helens Council’s sports pitches and taking account of the weather forecast for the next few days, a decision has been made to keep the pitches open this weekend.

"All matches are to be played at referee's discretion."
