Granddaughter of ex-Saints player wins place in Lancashire county women’s rugby squad

Granddaughter of ex-Saints player wins place in Lancashire county women’s rugby squad

BETH Stott has received a call-up to the Lancashire county women’s rugby team.

The 22-year-old from Haydock is one of 18 players from the Firwood Waterloo team to gain selection and bid for a spot in the England North side.

Her outstanding kicking ability as a fly half was honed as a junior rugby league player at Blackbrook alongside St Helens’ Jamie Foster, Gary Wheeler and Shaun Magennis, and her skill is evident as she remains England’s top kicker in the Rapture League - the collated results from 55 teams across three divisions of the women's rugby union.

She is following in the footsteps of her grandfather Tommy Stott, who played for Saints.

The recently graduated graphic designer will have her season’s first outing with Lancashire away to Cumbria on November 4.

Rich Freeman, Firwood Waterloo head coach, said: “Beth continues to improve in ability and confidence and has been selected for Lancashire with a high number of Firwood Waterloo women because of her quality as a player, dedication and hard work in improving her rugby.”
