DETECTIVES are investigating allegations Sia Soliola was struck with an entry barrier in a nightspot doorway during an attack in which he was beaten unconscious, the Star has learned.

The Star has learned police are also investigating allegations he was held down before being punched and kicked by a number of men.

Further details of the alleged violence at the Imperial bar in St Helens town centre that led to the Saints forward suffering serious facial injuries emerged this week.

The police investigation centres on allegations the 25-year-old was near to the entrance of the bar shortly after 2.20am on Monday, March 12.

The Star has learned police are investigating claims that:

  • After an apparent dispute near the doorway, Soliola was dragged into the bar’s foyer and held down by two men before another repeatedly punched and kicked him on the floor.
  • He was then thrown out of the nightspot before a rope attached to a metal chrome post entry barrier was swung at his head.
  • The Kiwi international was left unconscious on the Ormskirk Street pavement– and with no immediate medical assistance or first aid offered the front door of the premises was closed.

Details of the allegations emerged as police sought a review of the nightspot’s licence last week.

Ambulance crews were later called and Soliola, who paramedics said was bleeding from facial injuries, was taken to Whiston Hospital.

He suffered severe facial swelling and it was initially suspected he had suffered multiple fractures to his cheekbone and a broken nose.

Saints have since eased fears over the injuries suffered by the 6ft 3ins forward, with acting coach Mike Rush saying on Tuesday the player has no “broken bones”.

It remains unclear though when he will return to action.

Soliola has, however, thanked Saints supporters who have sent him goodwill messages via Twitter as he continues his recovery.

His account has been inundated since the Star revealed he was the victim of an alleged assault in St Helens town centre in the early hours of Monday.

Writing on the social media site, the fans’ favourite said: “Just wanna send a BIG SHOUT OUT to everyone’s support over this week!

“Onwards n upwards. I won’t give them the satisfaction and stay down!”

Three doormen - a 32-year-old from Speke, a 23-year-old from Lymm and a 24-year-old from Chester - were arrested on suspicion of assault and violent disorder at the Imperial in the early hours of Monday, March 12.

They have since been bailed pending further enquiries.
