SAINTS’ first game at Langtree Park brought a significant boost to St Helens town centre’s night time economy – with takings rocketing by 80 per cent at some restaurants and bars.

Thousands flocked into the heart of the town ahead of Friday night’s opening fixture at the new stadium and businesses reaped the benefits, according to St Helens Council.

Darren Jacklin, manager of the Running Horses on Chalon Way, said takings were boosted by between 70 and 80 per cent.

Meanwhile, Darren Westwood, manager of the nearby Glass House said takings were also significantly up.

He said: “There was a great atmosphere and at times we had a full house. People were walking past to other pubs because they could not get in.”

The Star reported earlier this month on hopes that the stadium’s arrival on the fringe of the town centre would bring a much-needed shot in the arm for the town centre economy.

The local authority has teamed up with Saints to use the club’s players to help encourage more visitors to shops and other venues.

Councillor Andy Bowden, St Helens Council’s cabinet member for urban regeneration and town centre, He said: “Considering this was one of the ramp up events with a maximum 13,000 capacity this is very promising.

“It will be interesting to see what happens when the stadium plays to its full 18,000 capacity.”
