LABOUR retained a seat in the Billinge and Seneley Green by-election, with the Liberal Democrats trailing in a dismal third place.
The by-election was held following the death of Billinge and Seneley Green councillor Richard Ward in May.
Alison Bacon, the Labour candidate, was elected with a commanding majority, with Conservatives in second place and the Liberal Democrats in third.
Turnout in the ward was only 24.8per cent, considerably lower than the round of local elections in May when it stood at 67.1per cent.
Labour remains in control of St Helens Council.
Result Alison Bacon (Lab) 1288, Elizabeth Black (Conservative) 624, Tom Gadsden (Lib Dem) 229, James Winstanley (BNP) 141.
