KIRKLAND Street has been closed after car crashed into a wall and another vehicle.
The collision occured after the driver of an Audi A3 suffered a medical episode at the wheel, police say.
The man has been taken to hospital while the driver of the other car is not believed to have been injured, added officers.
Merseyside Police confirmed they had closed the road after the crash this morning.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 9.40am today (Wednesday) to reports that an Audi A3 was in collision with a wall in Kirkland Street. It is believed the car was also in collision with a second car, an Audi A4.
"It is believed the male driver of the first vehicle suffered a medical episode and he has been taken to hospital.
"The male driver of the second car is not believed to have been injured.
"Officers remain at scene as enquiries are carried out."

In a tweet this morning, Merseyside Police said: "Please be advised that following an RTC, Kirkland Street, St Helens has been closed.
"Emergency Services are in attendance and dealing. Please avoid the area at this time and find an alternative route for your journey #DriveSafe & thank you for your understanding."
