ONE lane of the M6 has been closed at Haydock due to a van fire.

The vehicle was on fire on the M6 northbound at junction 23 at Haydock. There is congestion in the area to junction 22 at Newton-le-Willows.

Lane one, of three, is also closed on the main carriageway.

The fire has now been put out.

A traffic news update shortly after 2pm stated that "traffic is coping well". It added: "Lane one (Of two) remains closed as you head from the roundabout up towards the main carriageway.

"Van has since been recovered and a gritter is currently on scene."
