PUPILS and teachers at Garswood Primary School dressed up as characters from author Roald Dahl's books to celebrate what would have been the novelist's 100th birthday.
The children and staff from the Hamilton Road school were hoping to live up to a famous quote from Dahl's classic, Matilda: "Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog."
All children from the school and its nursery came on Tuesday (September 13) in costume as classic Dahl characters, including the Fantastic Mr Fox, the BFG, Willy Wonka, Matilda and oompa loompas.
Throughout the week, the children took part in Roald Dahl related activities such as making George's Marvellous Medicine, applying 'revolting recipes' to maths, and enjoyed taking part in drama-based dance workshops with theatre-in-education company West End in School.
Headteacher Pam Potter, who was transformed into the Grand High Witch from the Witches for the day, said: "We thoroughly enjoyed spending the week celebrating the 100th birthday of Roald Dahl, who is still a massive influence in schools.
"His books inspire children to develop a love for reading and will be treasured for hundreds of years to come."
