CONOR McGinn has today been selected as Labour's General Election candidate for St Helens North after a vote by party members.

The Northern Irishman, a political advisor, will replace the retiring Dave Watts as Labour's choice.

He was selected from a shortlist of six that included local challengers Barrie Grunewald, the St Helens Council leader, and councillor Andy Bowden, a former Mayor of St Helens who is Mr Watts' long serving constituency manager.

Mr McGinn said: "I'm overwhelmed by the support, confidence and trust you have placed in me and I promise to do my best hopefully as the next member of parliament."
